What Causes BED?

Binge EatingEating disorders involve more than using compensatory behaviors like purging or over-exercising to remain incredibly thin. Unlike anorexia or bulimia, binge eating disorder (BED) involves regular episodes of eating large amount of food with no immediate attempt to counter the effects of the habit. Those with BED may also eat fast even when they are not hungry.

Experts are not sure what exactly causes binge eating and other types of eating disorders. It is likely that they may involve atypical activities in different parts of the brain. Researchers, however, note that there several factors that may affect BED.


Research suggests that those with BED may have difficulties handling negative emotions. Many start eating too much to deal with anxiety, anger, or sadness. It is likely that they use food when faced with situations that cause great concern and self-doubt. Binge eating disorder treatment centers also note many of those who binge eat are depressed or have been depressed before.


Some people eat large amounts of food after skipping meals or a period of starvation. The thing is, a body in starvation causes strong cravings for food because there is no enough nutrition. Both dieting and preoccupations with food can raise the issue of loss of control. A little slip in a person’s diet may cause them to completely stop dieting and binge eat instead.

Societal Pressure

Sometimes, uncomfortable experiences or social situations may cause binge eating. It is likely for those who are teased about their appearance or body, making them feel that they don’t fit in. Such situations can cause unusual eating habits to cope with criticisms and negative comments. Peer pressure (as a way to conform) may also trigger an eating disorder.

Those who are suffering from BED are stuck in vicious cycling of dieting and binge eating. Low self-esteem is a major risk factor, which causes people to be extremely worried about their weight and how others perceive them. This results in dieting that can also encourage overeating through psychological and physiological mechanisms. It is important to get the right professional help to overcome the disorder.
